The CFO as a strategic copilot of the business

January 8, 2025

If anything has become clear in recent years, it is that the finance team plays a pivotal role in the transformation of companies. The CFO’s role now extends far beyond merely 'organising' the accounts; it involves actively shaping and projecting the organisation’s strategy.

Increasingly, the CFO is seen as a fundamental player in the company’s management, adopting a transversal and collaborative approach with other areas of the organisation.

The CFO's role in organisational transformation and strategy

The CFO is responsible for ensuring that the company stays on the right course and possesses the necessary qualities to serve as the natural partner—or “co-pilot”—to the CEO.

Although the CFO is not the one “driving,” they provide precise insights into how the “road” ahead looks, highlighting potential risks and helping the organisation move as quickly and safely as possible.

The CFO is also the one who proposes “alternative routes” when needed, ensuring sufficient “fuel” (liquidity forecasts) or planning a “technical stop” (a strategic shift) if “weather conditions” change (such as during a crisis).

The CFO's responsibilities as the CEO’s co-pilot

The CFO must monitor, in real time, that all key indicators on the organisation’s “dashboard” are aligned and functioning correctly, while adhering to “speed limits” and “traffic signs” (regulatory compliance). This ensures the company avoids potential “fines” (penalties or compliance issues).

The CFO’s work perfectly complements that of the CEO, who relies on a “co-pilot” to achieve organisational objectives. Building a strong working relationship between the two is essential for success. The CFO provides financial guidance and support, enabling the CEO to make informed business decisions. Without this input, the organisation risks losing direction and failing to meet its goals.

Strategic collaboration between CFO and CEO

The CFO must foster strong relationships with the rest of the executive team, which is essential for their role as the CEO’s “co-pilot.” They actively contribute to managing and leading key organisational projects.

The CFO works closely with the CEO to understand and implement the vision of the shareholders, aligning objectives and keeping all stakeholders informed of the “state of the journey.” They translate business data into clear, actionable insights.

One of the CFO’s most critical objectives is to ensure effective and aligned communication, both internally and externally.

Effective communication and CFO leadership

The CFO must understand and convey the CEO’s goals and vision (and vice versa) to ensure everyone in the organisation is working cohesively towards shared objectives.

In summary, the CFO’s role as the CEO’s “co-pilot” is an essential component of modern corporate leadership. They act as a trusted partner, collaborating actively across all facets of the organisation’s strategy and execution.
